Moystown
Moystown Demesne is a small townland located on the western edge of King’s County in the Electoral Division of Huntston, in Civil Parish of Tisaran, in the Barony of Garrycastle, in the County of Offaly. The Irish name for Moystown Demesne is Maigh Eistea, situated close to the villages of Cloghan, Ferbane, and Banagher.
Moystown Demesne borders Clonony Beg, Clonony More, Deerpark, Fearaghalee, Huntston and Lisclooney. Moystown is bordered by the River Brosna and the Shannon, and shares a border with Co. Galway. It was very wooded in the 19th century with extensive plantations and ornamental timber like ash, oak, birch, and lime. Wood was critical to Dublin’s furniture-making industry.
The L’Estrange family, in Moystown since 1633, owned Moystown House – the principal country house in the area – as well as nearby Huntston House. Moystown had a police barracks, ruins of several castles and the Catholic church of Tisaran. Mrs. L’Estrange was the patroness of a girl school in Tisaran.
