A Kilmeelchon Cill Milchon A Forgotten Monastery

The townland of Kilmeelchon is located less than a mile from the centre of Banagher. Until recent times floods on the Shannon made access between them impossible for weeks and even months at a time.

This record relates that Muintir Milchon, the community of the monastery of Kilmeelchon, joined with William Burke to attack the monastery of Clonmacnoise in 1202. William Burke was a very significant Anglo-Norman figure in Ireland and in particular in Connaught. Read more >>
